All of these apps will be released (if not already) at:
AUTOMAGIC (Sourceforge)
On to this app - This is called "Gift Box" for Linspire / Debian. This will only work on Debian-based distros (probably not Kubuntu due to the "sudo" snag, as you need to be fully logged in as root user to install from within the interface).
You should already have Python installed, but you will need to (most likely) go to CNR and get the tiny package "python-tk" to run this. For Debian, use apt-get install python-tk
It also requires a KDE desktop (i.e., the Linspire default, etc.)
Changelog: Version 0.3
Version 0.3 is supplied by the link, as of 4PM (EST) 24 June 2006
- no known issues, has been heavily tested, typos removed, etc., by myself the past week.
This app involves P2P (peer-to-peer) file sharing. I released a simple manually-run script to install giFT a few years back for LOS 4.0 (only), but this takes it a lot further. It's updated for the current LOS (5.0+) version and has a nice GUI front end.
When using LimeWire or similar, you usually connect to only one protocol. With giFT, you can currently connect to four simultaneously:
OpenFT, Gnutella, FastTrack (aka Kazaa/Grokster) and Ares.
Note though, that the only currently available Ares plugin for Linux is a bit deprecated and won't connect too well at this point (it usually shows just 2 users).
Configuring giFT is a bit cryptic for most, plus two of the plugins (FastTrack and Ares) must be downloaded and installed manually from 3rd Party sites in Europe. This app automatically does all the configuration work, includes all 4 working codecs, and can launch 2 GUI front ends (giFTcurs & Apollon).
In addition, the front end for Gift Box lets you start / stop the daemon, has a list box showing your downloaded files, plays music or videos with the app of your choice, and clones the configs to any user name, among other tools. It will automatically enable the download sources, without any editing or pre-configuration. It includes custom-compiled .deb's for Apollon and the Ares plugin, created within and for Linspire. Installation / configuration is automatic and you will be able to connect from within the interface in just a few minutes, with a good internet connection.

Download giftbox.py (right-click and "save target as"). When you have it, it must be copied into /usr/local/bin
giftbox.py
Download GIFT-BOX.desktop (this is the desktop icon to run the app), be sure to put it in your /root/Desktop folder, and you should have a clickable desktop icon to start the app.
When creating user accounts from within the app, this icon should be automatically replicated for the user.
GIFT-BOX.desktop
To run from the command line, without the icon, type this in a console:
python /usr/local/bin/giftbox.py
Good luck with it, more apps and content to be added soon.
